SCoFF claims no credit for the following events which are independently run in and around the SCoFF area, in some cases by Member Clubs or their organisers, but it does encourage and support them and hopes that members will encourage their regulars to attend.

  • SUSSEX All-day SINGAROUND Saturday 21 January 2012 from 11.00 a.m. - 11.00 p.m. The Royal Oak, High Street, Barcombe (near Lewes) East Sussex BN8 5BA. Free admission - good pub food on sale all day. First an hour of informal tunes while people arrive. Then the singing starts, finishing with a good hour of glorious choruses. Ballads & the occasional instrumental party piece will be very welcome too.
  • The above followed by an English Tunes Session on Sunday 22 January at the Elephant & Castle, Lewes - noon-3pm.
  • Whittlesea Straw Bear Festival 13th-15th January 2012 in Whittlesea, Cambs In Whittlesea, from when no one quite knows, it was the custom on the Tuesday following Plough Monday (the 1st Monday after Twelfth Night) to dress one of the confraternity of the plough in straw and call him a 'Straw Bear'. A newspaper of 1882 reports that "... he was then taken around the town to entertain by his frantic and clumsy gestures the good folk who had on the previous day subscribed to the rustics, a spread of beer, tobacco and beef". Suppressed after 1909, it was revived in 1980

  • Bursledon Music Festival Sat 4th Feb 2012 at Bursledon village hall ,Long Lane, Bursledon, Southampton. Live Music From 1200 to 2300 Licensed Bar, Home Cooked Food with Madison Heights, Paper Train, Southampton Ukulele Jam and David Phillips.   • The 16th Cheltenham Folk Festival 10-12 February 2012 with Dervish, The Albion Band, Brass Monkey and many more.
  • Frome Folk Festival Somerset 18-19 February 2012 - new event
  • Bournemouth Folk Festival 23-24 March 2012. guaranteed to fill your musical senses and put a huge smile on your face. The Bournemouth International Centre will play host to two jam-packed days of music and dancing with many famous and up-and-coming names.
  • Wickham Easter Festival (billed as the replacement for Gosport & Fareham) has been 'postponed' to be part of the Summer Festival 2-5 August - ie many of the same acts will be or have been booked then. For full details see
  • Folk Weekend Oxford 20th to 22nd April 2012 (in place of the full-scale Festival which ceased). The Old Fire Station (all weekend), Church of St Michael’s at the North Gate (Saturday evening concert).
  • Winchester Mayfest 25-26 May 2012. Friday is PubFest in Winchester. 11 Pubs will host music events from 7-11pm. Saturday is Mayfest proper with display dance and Concerts and drop-ins plus Ceilidh at the Discovery Centre - see wbsite.
  • La Grande Gennerie 4-8 June 2012 workshop in France with Reg Meuross, one of the new series taking over from Martyn and Danni Wyndham-Read's 'La Jeusseliniere' series which ended several years ago.
  • Isle of Wight Folkstation 6th - 8th July 2012, now to move to The Green Barn Field, Whitehouse Road, Porchfield, Isle of Wight.
  • Alton Folk Weekend Hants, 13-15 July 2012, In addition to the usual morris dancing, the weekend includes: Friday Evening Music Session, Free Open-Air Ceilidh in the Market Square on Saturday Afternoon - Bursledon Village Band, Dempsey-Robson-Tweed in Concert, A Saturday Evening Ceilidh including a performance by Alton Community Choir, Music and Dance Workshops including tutoring from Kevin Dempsey, Carolyn Robson & Karen Tweed, A Fok Band session for all comers, Free Open-Air Ceilidh in the Market Square at Sunday lunchtime - The Diatonics, Storytelling sessions on both Saturday and Sunday, Something for everyone - we hope you can join us for a great weekend.   • Beggars Fair Romsey, Hants 14 July 2012. Community Festival with free events all around the town. In the streets and in venues all around the town the best of local performers bring you folk, jazz, blues and world music, colourful dance displays and children’s entertainment. The Beggars Fair has been running since 1993 and is living up to its aims of showcasing local talent in a friendly environment. From big bands on the Cornmarket stage to intimate acoustic music in tranquil gardens, cheerful pub sessions and spellbinding storytelling, the day has a great atmosphere that keeps bringing people (and performers!) back year after year.

  • Dartington International Summer Schools 21 July - 25 August 2012
    28 July – 4 August Folk Music and Song. Directors Emily & Hazel Askew
    Join Emily and Hazel Askew for a course exploring folk music from the British Isles. Hazel will be teaching songs and ballads, covering style and technique. Emily will focus on traditional dance music, guaranteed to get your toes tapping. This course will culminate in an end of week ceilidh where participants can play, sing or dance. Any instrument or voice is welcome. There will be an emphasis on playing by ear, and no previous experience of folk music is necessary.
    4 – 11 August English Roots: Fiddle & Cello Tunes, 1651 – 2012. Directors Pete Cooper & Richard Bolton
    Pete Cooper, fiddle, and Richard Bolton, cello and guitar, explore dance tunes – jigs, reels, hornpipes, waltzes – and other repertoire from the English folk tradition, as well as presenting their own original pieces inspired by it. Expect a relaxed, aural teaching method: those new to folk music and more experienced players are all welcome.

  • SOUTHSEA FOLK ROOTS & BLUES DAY August 26th 2012. Live music at the Naval Base Establishments Central Sports Association ("Dockyard Club"). Blues Afternoon and Folk & Roots Evening concerts will take place at the Club on the Sunday of the Bank Holiday weekend. Supporting fringe events will be held at local pubs from the previous Friday through to the following Monday (see website for details).   • La Grande Gennerie 9-14 September 2012 workshop in France with Ashley Hutchings and Blair Dunlop, one of the series taking over from Martyn and Danni Wyndham-Read's 'La Jeusseliniere' series which ended several years ago.

  • Lewes Folk Festival Lewes, Sussex 11-14 October 2012 A joint venture by the two Lewes Folk Clubs.

  • Folk Fiddle withPete Cooper 26-28 October 201 is dedicated to introducing fiddlers to the wonderful repertoire of traditional airs and dance tunes. You don’t need previous experience of folk fiddling, but you do need to be of at least intermediate standard and to be game for the challenge of learning a range of jigs, reels, hornpipes, strasthpeys and so on, all by ear! Pete will also teach you how to bow and finger them in the traditional way and will give you legal copies of the written notes to take away at the end of the course.   • Bath International Festival of Mumming – November 16-18 2012. Events to include symposium, workshops, performances, parade and social events. Press release at . Details and Tickets . Events will include a symposium, with papers from several leading expert on the ancient art of Mumming, workshops in the mumming craft, talks, performances and a grand parade through the World Heritage Site City centre.
